John’s Run/Walk Shop has selected the Woodford Humane Society as the featured charity to participate in this year’s Iron Horse Half Marathon, Sunday Oct 14 in Midway. They are seeking 60 or more volunteers to help in various positions from 5:45 am to 11:30 am. Thank you,Transylvania, for signing up to donate blood on Halloween. What a great way to get into the spirit - of saving lives! As of October 26, there are only 16 open appointments remaining for whole blood donations and 2 appointments remaining for double red donations. That means that 66 people have already signed up to make a life saving gift. The blood drive will be held in the lounge (formerly known as the canteen) of the Campus Center on October 31 from 10:30 am to 3 pm. Kentucky Horse Park

The Kentucky Horse Park has an ongoing need for volunteers. The duties vary from helping in the offices, interacting with the public, and mucking out stalls in the barn depending on preference. Visit website under participate- volunteers for more information http://kyhorsepark.com/ 
  • Volunteers must be at least 18 years old. No horse experience needed.
  • Volunteers must sign a waiver prior to volunteering.
  • Volunteers are subject to a basic background check.
  • All volunteers will be required to wear a polo shirt and khakis pants/skirts, or appropriate business attire.
  • Special volunteer shirts are available at orientation and training sessions.
  • Horse enthusiasts required...if you love horses and want to work hands-on or just be around them, this is the place for you!
  • We encourage a commitment of at least one four-hour shift either once a week, or once every two weeks, and every effort will be made to place you in the area you would like to be in.
  • All new volunteers must meet with the Volunteer Coordinator prior to actually volunteering in order to go over Kentucky Horse Park volunteer policies and procedures.
  • Accident insurance (will be required and provided by the Kentucky Horse Park)

The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation is having an event called Halloween at the Campground. The dates are October 20 and October 27. Volunteers are needed from 10 am to 3 pm if interested in helping with games and crafts, serving lunch and being a costume judge. Also volunteers needed from 7-10:30 pm if interested in helping with the Haunted Trail and hayride. These volunteers would need to wear an APPROPRIATE costume.

Transylvania University AOII is volunteering there from 7:00-10:30 on October 20.

Fayette Alliance Town Branch Stream Cleanup- Sept. 23

The Allies of the Alliance, The Bourbon Review and other volunteers are helping Fayette Alliance to cleanup Town Branch Stream: Sunday, Sept. 23, from 1-5 p.m. at 1200 Manchester St. Volunteers should wear closed-toed shoes and bring rain boots/waders, if you have them. Fayette Alliance will provide latex and cotton work gloves, trash bags, and other materials needed to cleanup a stream. There is no cost to participate. Scarves for Special Olympics Kentucky – 9-28 and 10-8



Special Olympics Kentucky 2013 Scarf Project

Special Olympics Kentucky is seeking 500-700 knitted or crocheted scarves for the athletes, coaches and volunteers at the 2013 State Winter Games. You can make scarves on your own or join in on the scarf-making events on Friday, September 28 and Monday, October 8, 11:30 am to 1:30 pm in Room #1 of the CARE House. If you don’t know how to knit or crochet, we will teach you. You will need to provide your own yarn and tools for this project.

Here’s a little more about what they want:

·         Scarves should be made of either Red Heart Super Saver Brand yarn (no. 312 in black and no. 400 in grey heather) OR Red Heart Soft Brand yarn (no. 4614 in black and no. 9440 in grey heather) Also bring No.8 (5 mm) needles to knit or No. 19 (5.5 mm) hook to crochet.

·         They should measure 54 to 60 inches long and six inches wide

·         There are no restrictions on design except that both colors must be used in each scarf.

If you choose to make scarves on your own, the Office of Community Service and Civic Engagement will collect scarves on October 12, November 12 and December 12 to take to SOKY. The Arboretum is seeking volunteers to help with the Trees, Trails & Creatures event on Thursday, October 11th from 8-11 a.m., Friday, October 12th from 8:30-4 p.m. and Saturday, October 13th from 3:30 -6:30 p.m. for the following job duties:

*Thursday October 11th (volunteers arrive at 8-11 a.m.)
    Guides (people lead groups of visitors from creature to creature)

    Creature (dress up like an animal and tell visitors about yourself –
costume provided)

    Tree station (show students different leaves and seeds from trees)

    Tracks station (allow students to make track prints with rubber stamps,
 ink and paper)


*Friday, October 12th (anytime between 8:30-4)
    Pumpkin washing for pumpkin decorating on Saturday


*Saturday, October 13th (volunteers arrive at 3:30-6:30 p.m.)
    Guide (people lead groups of visitors from creature to creature)

    Creature (dress up like an animal and tell visitors about yourself –
                   costume provided)

    Tree station (show students different leaves and seeds from trees)

    Tracks station (allow students to make track prints with rubber stamps,
                 ink and paper)

    Parking Attendants (manage parking area)

    Pumpkin Decorating (help visitors decorate pumpkins with paint)

    Face Painting (paint visitor's faces)

    Floater (make sure everyone is happy and safe)

Bluegrass PRIDE Med Toss – Sept 29

Bluegrass PRIDE is looking for volunteers to help with their annual Med Toss event on Saturday September 29. They need four volunteers at each of the following locations to hand out literature, count cars and mark out personal information on prescription bottles:

Volunteers are needed from 9 am to 3 pm– rain or shine, but the time can be split into two work shifts of 9 am to noon or noon to 3 pm. This is usually a fun event with great turnout, meeting an important need in our community. Join the Carnegie Center on October 11 in their celebration of the National Day on Writing! Volunteer to go to a writing station at local businesses or organizations around Lexington and encourage others to creatively write about this year's theme, "The Many Voices of Kentucky." The CARE House, on Transylvania’s campus, will be one of the writing sites. Eligible students may earn work study funding for helping with this project at the CARE House. Veterans Administration Home Respite Program - Ongoing
The Veterans Administration is seeking reliable volunteers to help with their Home Respite Program. Volunteers provide dignified, compassionate support to ill and injured veterans in their homes. Volunteers must be over 18 years old, have have their own transportation, pass a background check, attend training, be courteous, and dependable. Volunteers may make visits 1-2 times a week for a few hours. The next training is on September 22, from 10 am-2:30 pm. Each month, about 500 babies are born in Fayette county hospitals. Fayette County Public Schools encourages new families to engage in lifelong learning by giving them a gift bag with educational materials. The Office of Community Service and Civic Engagement invites Transy volunteers to help assemble those gift bags Thursday, Oct 18. Volunteers are needed at 4-5 p.m. and 5-6 p.m. at the old Johnson Elementary School, 123 Sixth Street. Eligible students may earn work-study funding for their service, but must contact Karen Anderson in advance. Volunteers should use their Transy e-mail addresses to sign up by Wednesday, Oct 17 here. If this is a successful event, the Staff Engagement Team will take over leadership for the project and manage it on a monthly basis.
