The Kentucky Summit on Philanthropy is scheduled for September 11-12, 2013, at the Lexington Hyatt Regency.  Registration deadline is September 4. Keynote speaker Josh Nadzam of Lexington's Manchester-Bidwell Replication Project, will share his personal story of perseverance in the face of adversity and how it inspired his desire to make a difference in his community. LTMS Football Team Study Hall - ASAP


Lexington Traditional Magnet School is in dire need of 3-4 volunteers to help with study hall. Volunteers are needed from now until the week of November 7-14, 2013.  Study hall will be held in the LTMS cafeteria every Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 3:55 until 5:00p.m. for approximately 50 players.  The Associate Principle, Danita Johnson, is the certified staff that would be at the school during that time.  Student volunteers would need to arrive approximately at 3:45p.m. each day that study hall/practice occurs.

The Kentucky Horse Park - Ongoing


The Kentucky Horse Park has volunteer opportunities starting September 6 and ending December 31. Tasks range from greeting guests to working with horses.  They will have a Hands-on Training on October 19 for volunteers with little or no horse experience, and who are anxious to learn.  This will include educational training about horse behavior and barn safety. The Jessamine County Cancer Coalition presents the 8th Annual K-9 2K For A Cure Run/Walk(1.2 miles)on September 7 at 9:30 am.  Participants should be at Lake Mingo by 9am. The Office of Community Service and Civic Engagement is seeking Transylvania students to serve on a Community Grant Committee. The goal is to train a group of 5-9 student leaders to review grant applications and make decisions about awarding limited funds to support student lead off-campus community service and civic engagement projects. The group will have $500 to award for use in 2013-14. Help Receiving Finished Barrels from Artists
Friday, August 30, 9 am - 1 pm
6 volunteers needed, divided into three teams: Team 1 will help to receive artists designed barrels and place them onto pre-made stanchions. Team 2 will drill holes into the barrels and set lag bolts.  A final team will vacuum wood debris.  (Teams may be rotated as needed.)
Team 1: Some moderate lifting required (40lbs)
Team 2: Experience using a power drill a plus
Team 3: Use a shop vac and broom to remove saw dust
 
 
Assist in the Professional Photography Session
Friday, August 30, 12 pm - 4 pm
Each team will move barrels into position for the photographer then return to where the barrels will be placed for clear coat.  A furniture mover will be provided for transportation. 
Team 1 & 2: Some moderate lifting required (40 lbs.)
 
 
Public Preview Days at Mason Structure
Saturday, September 14, 9:00am – 1:00pm
Saturday, September 14, 1pm – 6:00pm
Sunday, September 15, 11:30am – 3:00pm

 4 volunteers needed per shift for a total of 16 volunteer shifts.
Each volunteer will be assigned a specific duty; volunteers’ positions will rotate periodically so that each volunteer can enjoy the exhibit.  LexArts staff will relieve volunteers as needed for breaks.  Volunteer duties will include:
Front Door:  2 volunteers
Exhibit Monitors: 2 volunteers


Placing the Barrels on the Street
Sunday, September 15, 5pm – 9pm
8 volunteers needed
Volunteers will help move Barrels to a transport trailer.  Stanchions will be bolted down to the trailer bed.  They will be transported to Vine Street and placed upon a concrete pad and secured.    A plaque will also be mounted to each pad.

Common Good's After-School Program needs you! The program runs Monday-Thursday from 2:30-6:00 PM for the school year. It serves students in grades K-12 from North Lexington neighborhoods. The program includes four components: education, recreation, spiritual formation and leadership development. They need 35 mentors to commit to volunteering one day a week for a semester or the school year. Background check and volunteer training required. Peer Volunteers Needed For NAMI Warm Line


The NAMI Warm Line is a non-emergency phone line for people living with a mental illness, currently looking for volunteers. Individuals can call the Warm Line if need someone to talk to, or going through a stressful time, feeling cut-off from the world and isolated. The Warm Line is seeking caring individuals to help with the Line. Volunteers should possess or be willing to develop strong communication skills, possess the ability to work independently, as well as in a group, and have an  interest in working with adults of diverse backgrounds with mental health issues. Mandatory telephone training and QPR Gatekeeper Suicide Prevention Training are required. Priority will be given to those living with mental illness, but all interested parties should give it a try!

The Kentucky Blood Center has a critical need for all negative types of blood.  Donors who give blood before September 5 will still qualify for Transylvania's October 31 on-campus drive.  To learn the details of donating, visit the KBC website, or call 800-775-2522. Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (KODA) is looking for volunteers for a couple of events:
 
-On Sunday, September 15 they need 6 volunteers at the downtown, Central Library in Lexington from Noon – 5 pm. This will be a preview party of a documentary film that the library has produced about an art project KODA sponsored at UK about organ donation and transplantation.  Volunteers will act as ushers, greeters and support staff.  They need to wear flat shoes, ‘church clothes’, and be willing to turn off their cell phones for the time they are volunteering.  They are looking for volunteers with outgoing personalities, a willingness to work to do what needs to be done,  and at the same time, have fun.
 
-On Friday, September 20, they need 5-6 volunteers to help with the Lexington Gallery Hop at the Central Library, downtown Lexington, from 3:30 pm-9 pm.  The Gallery Hop exhibit will include the 8 paintings featured in the documentary, displayed on the second floor of the library. Volunteers will help by setting up the artwork, setting up the finger food, serving, cleaning up and acting as greeters and directing visitors to the exhibit.  Casual dress, willingness to turn off cell, and ability to get the job done are expected of all volunteers.

Lord's Supper Soup Kitchen - Ongoing



The Lord's Supper Soup Kitchen is now open at 728 Knox Blvd, Radcliff KY next to Enterprise Car rental.  Their mission is to feed those less fortunate and help link families to local agencies, moving toward self sufficiency. They will be open Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 6:30 pm. They are currently in the process of obtaining their 501 (c3) status.
 
Their second volunteer orientation will take place on August 10 at 12 noon at The Lord's Supper. There will be a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony on August 12 from 5-6 p.m. Donations are always needed. Any questions, please call 270-351-SOUP.  

Joyce Hamilton works at Fort Knox with the Army Wounded Warrior Program (AW2) and retired from US Army after 22 years of service.  Her husband, Terrience Hamilton, is still active duty.
