The LBX Dig Deep 5K Run/Walk will take place on Saturday, July 13, 8:30 am at Coldstream Park, 1875 Newtown Pike in Lexington. LBX, makers of the Link-Belt excavator, are sponsoring this event to benefit Hospice: 50% of the proceeds will benefit Hospice of the Bluegrass and the other 50% will benefit the National Hospice Foundation. Wilderness Road Girl Scouts Thin Mint Sprint - Sept 28



Girl Scouts for Kentucky’s Wilderness Road is hosting the Thin Mint Spring, on Saturday, September 28, at the RJ Corman Railroad Group in Nicholasville, KY.  This is a 5K run/walk and a 10K run. The event begins at 9 am. This event is placing a special emphasis on "helping build a generation where bullying is not the norm". 

Prizes will be awarded for the best times, best costumes and best fundraisers. As their flyer says, “Every child needs a hero! Bullied children need superheros! Come dressed like a superhero, leave feeling like one!”

Soles4Souls is doing it AGAIN! They will host shoe distributions in seven cities across the United States during Barefoot Week - July 21st through 28th. To make Barefoot Sunday a success, they need your help!

“We have received such an amazing response from Churches, Synagogues, and places of worship in previous years, that we have extended Barefoot Week into Barefoot Month  - JULY 2013!  We are thrilled to be able to offer such an incredible opportunity of awareness to communities nationwide with this special event! Hiring Our Heroes is a starting a new program that enables local veterans’ organizations and businesses to engage with veterans and spouses in a way that doesn’t involve directly employing them. This program involves hosting resume reviews, mock interviews, and employment workshops. This is a much needed service and is a great way to get local organizations and small businesses more engaged in helping the veterans in their community. They are looking for 3-4 volunteers to do onsite resume review/ mock interviews with the jobseekers at a fair on July 11 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at University of Phoenix, 10400 Linn Station Rd Suite, Louisville, KY 40223. The Corporation for National and Community Service recently published a study about the connections between volunteering and employment.  As people interested in community service, civic engagement and volunteering, you may be interested to review their work.
Key findings in  Volunteering as a Pathway to Employment include:
  • Volunteers have a 27 percent higher likelihood of finding a job after being out of work than non-volunteers
  • Volunteers without a high school diploma have a 51 percent higher likelihood of finding employment
  • Volunteers living in rural areas have a 55 percent higher likelihood of finding employment.

    Kentucky Refugee Ministries is looking for someone to volunteer to teach basic ESL to some of their students for up to 4 mornings a week (M-TH), from 9:30-11:30 am.  Lesson plans will be provided by one of the trained ESL teachers we have here in the mornings.  We would like this person to be available at least through July.     Nominations are now being taken for the Kentucky Philanthropy Initiative's Commonwealth Award, honoring individuals or organizations who have made significant contributions to the betterment of Kentucky through philanthropy. This award will be presented at the fifth annual Summit on Philanthropy, September 11-12 at the Hyatt Regency in Lexington. The awards recognize individuals or organizations who have distinguished themselves in the field of philanthropy through service, innovation, commitment and/or lifetime achievement. Community Hospice Barren River is looking for volunteers for their staff picnic on Saturday, June 22.  Volunteer tasks include running the cotton candy machine, snow cone machine and bouncy stations.  They need a total of 4-8 volunteers.  The event is from 10 am -2 pm Central Time in Bowling Green, KY.  Lunch would be included for volunteers.     The Carnegie Center is working with the Institute for Dyslexia Education in Appalachia (IDEA) to offer the three-week program for children, grades 1-8, to receive reading instruction at the Carnegie Center. Carnegie IDEA Academy, CIA, take place every morning (8:30-12:30) between June 10-28.


    Tutors in the Carnegie IDEA Academy will be paid $8.00 per hour for their time: three weeks of half-day instruction, and two full days of training on Thursday, June 6 and Friday, June 7, from 8:30 am -4:30 pm, at the Fayette County Extension Office off Red Mile Road. This specialized 1:1, multisensory, structured reading curriculum is designed to improve reading, writing, comprehension and fluency. Tutors will be trained by IDEA staff. The Orton Gillingham approach used by IDEA has been successful throughout the country and abroad. Hundreds of children in Appalachia have benefitted from these classes over the last thirty years.

    Online registration is now underway here for the 2013 A Midsummer Night’s Run event scheduled Saturday, Aug. 10 in downtown Lexington. Online registration will continue until midnight Friday, August 9. This year’s race is jointly presented by sister hospitals Baptist Health Lexington, Baptist Health Richmond and Baptist Health Corbin.

    A Midsummer Night’s Run regularly attracts more than 5,000 participants. Events begin with the One-Mile Fun Walk/Run at 6 p.m., followed at 6:35 p.m. by the perennial favorite, The Fastest Kid in Town, a series of sprints for children ages 1 through 12. The main event, the 5K Race, will get underway at 8:30 p.m.

    The 2013 race sponsors are John’s Run/Walk Shop, WKYT-TV, 104.3 The Cat, Mix 94.5, 98.1 The Bull, Baptist Health HealthwoRx Fitness & Wellness Center, Time Warner Cable Media, Orange Leaf, CycleYOU and Jamba Juice.
