MLK Day of Service - By December 9

MLK Day of Service - December 9

In January 2013, Transylvania hosted several community service opportunities for our students as well as the Lexington community. Opportunities ranged from knitting for Special Olympics to playing with children in the Amachi program.  It was a great way to make it a day 'on' for our community.

Now is the time to plan for the national day of service. Project leaders may have their own projects in mind, or may take leadership for past project that could be continued, including the Amachi Field Day, the MLK Day Blood Drive (work with Barton Lynch), valentines for the troops, or other projects.    If you would like to coordinate a project for this day of service, please contact Karen Anderson, kanderson@transy.edu by December 9.

Salvation Army Angel Tree - Nov 18 to Dec 6

Transylvania will once again host three Salvation Army Angel Trees.  These trees will feature tags with gifts that are being sought by children in our community.  These children are members of financially struggling families.  Tags will be available beginning November 18 at the Campus Center, Beck Center and the Transylvania Book Store. Tags will be numbered; we ask all who participate to indicate their name on the spreadsheet near the tree so we know who took what tags, in the event we need to follow up about the gift. Gifts need to be returned UNWRAPPED by December 6, or you may opt to take your gift directly to Salvation Army's Angel Tree Distribution Center. 1030 South Broadway Lexington  (the old Winn-Dixie grocery store). For more information, contact Karen Anderson, kanderson@transy.edu. For more information about this program in general, contact Michael Summers, Michael.summers@use.salvatinoarmy.org

Habitat for Humanity Build and ReStore - November and December

Habitat for Humanity Build and ReStore -
November and December

As we enter the season for haunted houses, Lexington Habitat for Humanity urges you to set aside a little time to help the organization's partner families, many of whom are enduring pretty scary living conditions until their homes are completed. Moldy walls, leaky plumbing, faulty heating systems and insect infestations are just a few of the problems Habitat families hope to escape when they become homeowners.

Multiple builds are underway this fall, and help is especially needed on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in November and December.

To schedule to work at a build this fall, contact Volunteer Coordinator Risa Richardson at risar@lexhabitat.org.

Habitat also urgently needs volunteers to work four-hour shifts at their ReStore, located at 451 Southland Drive. Volunteers are especially needed to serve as greeters, cashiers, loaders and warehouse assistants on weekdays from 1:30-5:30 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. and on Saturdays from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., 1:30-4:30 p.m. and 5-7 p.m. For more information about volunteering at the ReStore, contact Catherine Trout at catherinet@lexhabitat.org

BTW Community Fall Festival - October 26

BTW Community Fall Festival - October 26

10-23-13 Update: Several booths have backed out so they still need support. Call Ms. Celeste Curd, 859- 402-3228 to see how you can help.
***

Booker T Washington Elementary and Intermediary Schools are looking for booths for their Community Fall Festival, Saturday, October 26 from noon - 4 pm.  The event will take place at Douglass Park (rain site in the school.)

You will need to come up with your own booth ideas, but some booths suggested include:

-face painting (OCSCE has a two kits to loan for this!)
-photo booth (take pics and e-mail to the families)
-nail painting
-hair spray temporary color into hair
-math games
-crafts
-spin art
-geography games
-healthy foods
-Are you smarter than the great pumpkin? (like Are you smarter than Santa's elf at Crimson Christmas...)

They may or may not need you to bring your own table - If a group of volunteers would be willing to help set up and tear down, they could probably find tables. For now plan to either bring a table (OCSCE has two portable ones to loan if you need it!) OR, plan a booth that will not require the use or a table (toss-across? dance?)

For more information or to sign up for a booth, contact Ms. Celeste Curd, 859- 402-3228, asya1126@yahoo.com  by October 8. Because booths are 'first come first serve', you might call with your proposed booth but also have two back up booths in mind in case your #1 choice is already taken.
