The Race to Read, sponsored by Equus Standardbred Station, will take to the streets of downtown Midway, Kentucky, on Saturday, April 19 from 8:30 am - noon.

The 11th Annual Race to Read was first run in 2002 and is in memory of Karri Casner who was killed in a terrorist attack in Bali. This event supports The Race for Education and The Starting Gate's educational programs and scholarships.

Overall, more than 100 awards will be given to participants: There are many divisions and prizes, including wheelchair and stroller! Pre-registration ends on April 17. For more information or to register, visit this site.

2014 Run for the Paws 5k - April 13


The Winchester-Clark County Parks and Recreation presents the 2014 Run for the Paws 5k Run/Walk to Benefit the Clark County Animal Shelter, Sunday, April 13, at 2:00pm at the BCTC Winchester-Clark County campus (2020 Rolling Hills Ln, Winchester, KY 40391). This event raises money and awareness for the Clark County Animal Shelter. Animals will be available for adoption at the race, and participants are encouraged to bring their friendly, vaccinated pets as well. Prize money of $300, $200, and $100 will be awarded to the top three overall male and female finishers.

Race-day registration is $35. If you are participating in the Clark County Wellness Challenge and preregister, the cost is only $10. Participants are also asked to bring a donation item to benefit animals on race day.

Less than 5% of the eligible population donates blood. 97% of the population will need blood products in their lifetime. Sign up to donate at Transylvania's upcoming blood drive on Wednesday, April 02, 2014 in the Campus Center Gym from 10:30 AM-4:30 PM. Click here to schedule your donation appointment on-line. Please fill out the required donor form as requested. You will be prompted to enter a sponsor code in order to view the upcoming blood drives. The sponsor code for Transylvania University is 034-585. Select the blood drive date desired (April 2) and choose from available appointment times. If you have any questions, you can contact Karen Anderson at (859) 233-8182 .
Among college groups in KBC's service area, Transylvania University ranks #3, just behind Morehead State and Eastern Kentucky University in terms of number of units donated.  Transylvania University is 171 units donated ahead of #4 University of the Cumberlands. Help keep our rank at #3, or better yet, convince others to help us climb to #2.

Reforest The Bluegrass - April 12

Reforest The Bluegrass is designed to recreate pre-settlement, streamside forests that were once native to the inner Bluegrass Region of Kentucky.  The 2014 event will take place on Saturday, April 12th 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Hisle Park.  Volunteers will receive free lunch, tree-planting training and a t-shirt (first come, first served). God’s Pantry Food Bank – Spring 2014

God’s Pantry Food Bank is looking for volunteers for its two children’s programs, the Kids Café and the BackPack Program.

·         The Kids Café Program is designed to provide free hot meals and snacks to low-income children through a variety of community locations where children congregate – such as community centers, churches, and schools. God’s Pantry currently has five locations in the Fayette County Community: the 7th Street Community Center, Embrace Church, St. Luke’s United Methodist Church, Consolidated Baptist Church, and the West End Community Empowerment Project (W.E.C.E.P).

·         The BackPack Program is designed to provide children with a backpack full of food items each week to ensure that each child has adequate food during the weekends. At this time, God’s Pantry is sponsoring 17 locations in Fayette County alone.
