YMCA Fall Festival – Oct 24th

YMCA Fall Festival – Oct 24th

On Friday, October 24th from 6:00 – 8:00pm, the Beaumont & North Lexington YMCA will host a Fall Festival. Volunteers are needed to run Halloween-themed games for participating families. North Y staff asks that volunteers arrive around 5:40 that evening to be assigned to a game.

This is a great way to serve the Lexington community that Transy is a part of! Make sure to wear a Transy shirt (if not a costume!) to show the community that we support them.

If interested, please contact Roshni Desai at rdesai@transy.edu or (859) 233-8182.

7th Annual 2nd Sunday – Oct 12th

7th Annual 2nd Sunday – Oct 12th

Lace up your favorite pair of tennis shoes and explore the proposed route of Lexington’s Legacy Trail! The Legacy Trail is a two-way cycle track (protected bike lane) that will allow bicycle movement in both directions on one side of the road. This pathway, sprawling from Coolavin Park to 4th Street to Isaac Murphy Memorial Art Garden Trailhead at Midland Avenue, will provide a safe place to be physically active in Lexington.

You are invited to walk alone or with a pet, run, rollerblade, bike, skate, or push a stroller through the Trail starting 3:00pm on October 12th and ending at 5:00pm. Additional outdoor family activities will be available at Coolavin Park (550 W Sixth Street) for all ages and abilities.

Already know about the Legacy Trail? Volunteers are needed to help guide people through the Legacy Trail. If you would like to volunteer, please contact Roshni Desai at rdesai@transy.edu or Suzanne Smith at srsmith@email.uky.edu.

Harrison Backpack Project – Ongoing

Harrison Backpack Project – Ongoing

Make a difference and fight hunger in your community! Transylvania University and Sodexo have teamed up with Harrison Elementary to provide Harrison Elementary students with backpacks filled with meals. Project leaders and hungry students need you to help pack the backpacks!

Every Thursday at 4pm and 6pm, food donated by God’s Pantry will be waiting in the CARE House to be packed into bags that will be given to students who desperately need it. You and your organization are welcome to assist at the time most convenient to you. Ideally, various organizations will rotate each week to pack and will drop off the packed goods at Harrison Elementary the following morning. The team with the most rotations will receive a prize!

Please sign your organization up here to participate. If you have any questions, comments, concerns, feel free to contact Roshni Desai at (859)233-8182 or rdesai@transy.edu.

Light the Night Walk – Oct 18th

Light the Night Walk – Oct 18th

Attention all Transylvania students, faculty and staff! Many of you may know about Transy Alum Torsie Haugli and her battle with Leukemia and Lymphoma. Whether you joined the support team for Torsie on her diagnosis date or after purchasing a delicious baked good at the wildly successful bake sale hosted by the ladies of Tri-Delta and Phi Mu, all of your efforts are greatly appreciated. Now another chance to pitch in has arrived.

Come support Transylvania Alum Torsie Haugli and others currently diagnosed with Leukemia and Lymphoma by participating in The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Light the Night Walk on October 18th, 2014 at 7:30pm in the Whitaker Bank Ballpark.

An excerpt from the Team Torsie page at http://www.lightthenight.org/:

“On the morning of her college graduation, Torsie was taken to the ER in Lexington, KY for severe pain and a high fever. She was then transferred to the Cleveland Clinic, where she has remained, and was diagnosed with Anaplastic Large T-Cell Lymphoma ALK Positive with Leukemic involvement. She underwent chemotherapy and was responding well enough to have her bone marrow transplant. Just days before the transplant, doctors discovered a brain tumor. She continued chemotherapy until the tumor stopped responding to treatment, and has since begun radiation.

Your involvement in the Light the Night Walk as either a participant, a donor, or as both help the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society make cures happen. Amazing and inspirational young men and women benefit from your efforts and support.

For a more hands-on method of assistance to those enduring the life-altering effects of Leukemia and Lymphoma, sign up to volunteer for the Light the Night Walk. Volunteers are needed for all aspects of the Walk from 9:00am that morning to 9:00pm that night; individuals are needed to set up, greet participants, light luminaries, manage the general store or concession area, assist with volunteer check-in, hand out lanterns or t-shirts, and to monitor the children’s area. With around 80 positions to fill, volunteering is encouraged.

To volunteer, please contact Emily Rives at (859) 226-0764 or by email. To donate, please visit the Team Torsie page or click here to search for another team. Thank you!
