We Connect Now - Ongoing

We Connect Now http://weconnectnow.wordpress.com/ is a website designed to serve college students with disabilities. Gabriela McCall Delgado designed the website to connect and integrate college student with disabilities as a virtual community, giving voice on important issues, particularly college student and their access to higher education and employment.  We Connect Now has been serving college students with disabilities since April 2008. It serves college students in all 50 states and 10 countries.

The Kentucky Horse Park Foundation is looking for several volunteers to help with the following events:

Old Kentucky Nights

A program designed for groups of 35 – 1,000 people. Guests receive souvenirs, take hay rides and leisurely strolls through the park and enjoy various entertainment options. Volunteers give tours on golf carts and occupy the Museum Desk to answer questions for visitors.

Upcoming Dates Shifts (evenings for 2 – 4 hours)

Road to the Horse

Volunteers are needed to help with the "Ride the Park" fundraiser as stewards and with registration. Stewards will drive golf carts around the designated riding sections to respond to accidents and emergencies and to ensure safety. Drivers are also needed to shuttle guests around the park during the main event.

Tour Guide Training

Come learn the routes and information to give a great tour to park guests. There are a variety of tours that you can sign up for throughout the year after you have attend the training. Volunteers who have been tour guides previously can come help with the training or come as a refresher!

Several community centers will host spring break camp for area youth during Fayette County Public School Spring Break.  Volunteers are sought to help with registration and check-in, clean up, help with snacks, assist with or lead activities like arts & crafts, sports activities, etc.

 

Volunteers are needed at the following locations:

Location:  Dunbar Community Center

Days:  April 1 – 5 (M – F)

Time:  10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

 

Location:  William Wells Brown Community Center

Days:  April 1 – 5 (M – F)

Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra Instrument Petting Zoo

 

The Lexington Philharmonic (LexPhil) is looking for volunteers to work with Instrument Petting Zoos during the day around the community. This is the opportunity for children to handle musical instruments. They will need 2-3 volunteer at each event. Location and times are listed below:

Junior Volleyball Association

The Junior Volleyball Association is hosting it's 2013 World Challenge in Louisville at the Kentucky Exposition Center on April 11-14. The world challenge showcases the nation’s top volleyball club teams and welcomes hundreds of teams and thousands of both players and spectators from all over the United States.
 
Volunteers are needed for various jobs to help make this tournament a success for these young athletes. Positions may include ticket sales, set-up, tear down, and registration.

Upward Bound- March 15

Upward Bound at BCTC is looking for compensated support for their program. Upward Bound is a program that motivates disadvantaged high school students to pursue postsecondary education. They are looking for people to serve as Tutor-Counselors and Night Monitors during their 6-week program. Tutor-Counselors earn $250/week and Night Monitors earn $7.25/hour. FCPS Reality Store- April 10-12

Welcome to the Game of Life

FCPS Youth Service Center is hosting the 5th annual Reality Store Project for middle school students in Fayette County. This program teaches students about the "reality" of life as an adult. Volunteers are needed to work booths that will help students on how to spend money according to a simulated budget. Each booth will have a different topic and will help determine the success or failure of the student on making beneficial financial choices such as higher education, transportation, housing etc.The program will be April 10-12, 2013, at the Fayette Co. Cooperative Extension Office (4H) on Red Mile Rd. Breakfast and lunch are included for all volunteers.



Monday and Tuesday

April 12 and 13 9:00am – Orientation for Volunteers (and breakfast)

It's time for the spring term of College for Living. Volunteers are needed to help teach classes and help with registration.  College for Living is a series of classes hosted on Transylvania's campus, providing social and educational opportunities for people with developmental disabilities. Classes will take place in the first floor classrooms of Haupt Humanities, between 6:30 -8 pm on the following days:

New volunteers should plan to attend an orientation at 6:15pm or 6:50 pm.
For liaiblity purposes, only Transylvania University students, staff and faculty or staff of Bluegrass Mental Health/Mental Retardation Board  and affiliated programs may volunteer with this opportunity.

United Way of the Bluegrass is once again presenting Get On Board. This program reaches out to underrepresented groups for participants, trains them on nonprofit governance, and facilitating placement on nonprofit boards.  This would be a good opportunity for students to strengthen leadership skills and provide networking opportunities to increase community involvement. Step By Step is seeking volunteers for Step Into Beautiful, a tea style fashion show and the signature fundraiser for Step By Step. The volunteers will serve  tea and desserts during the fashion show. Step Into Beautiful will take place on March 9^th; volunteers are needed from noon – 4 pm. Reforest the Bluegrass

Reforest the Bluegrass is scheduled for Saturday, April 13 at Hisle Park. This is a great way to join friends and neighbors to plant trees and contribute to environmental preservation. Volunteers will help plant streamside forests and build up the long-lost woods of Lexington for generations to come. Volunteeres will receive a free t-shirt, lunch, and tree-planting training.

From the Streets to a Home Mentor Training - March 16

 

The From the Streets to a Home program gives a path to housing stability for those who are struggling with homelessness. Since 2009 this program has helped over 400 women, men, families leave the streets and have a place to call home. With the stability of a place to live folks can begin to address the causes of their prior homelessness. The Circle of Care, a component of From the Streets to a Home, needs more mentors: men and women who will commit to being part of a team that gives 2 hours a week to connecting with and walking with the "newly housed".

 

If you are interested in this program, the Mentor Training will be held Saturday March 16 from 10:00am-2:00pm (lunch provided) at The Community Inn, 824 Winchester Rd.

 

They are looking for 30 new, committed adult volunteers for this program. Training includes learning about the program, the barriers faced by the homeless, and thow the program reduces the suffering of homelessness.
