Volunteers Needed for the new Ronald McDonald Family Room^®

 

The Ronald McDonald House Charities^® of the Bluegrass is looking for compassionate and responsible volunteers to assist with an exciting new program located within the walls of Kentucky Children’s Hospital.  The new Ronald McDonald Family Room^® provides a “place to go when you can’t to home” for patient families and friends who need a break from the stress of their child’s medical care but are unable to leave the hospital.

Located on the 4^th floor of UK Hospital, the Ronald McDonald Family Room^® will help keep families close to their child’s bedside while providing a home-like area to relax. Much like the Ronald McDonald House^®, the Ronald McDonald Family Room offers a comfortable and welcoming environment dedicated to helping families lessen their stress while coping with a child’s illness.  Amenities of the Family Room include a welcoming volunteer staff, McDonald’s^® coffee, snacks, personal use electronic gaming and DVD systems, toys, puzzles, magazines and books.

The Ronald McDonald Family Room requires the help of dozens of dedicated volunteers.   The Room will be open 12 hours each week day and 8 hours on both Saturday and Sunday and will be staffed entirely by volunteers working four-hour shifts.   All volunteers must be 18 years of age or older, dependable, good listeners, and able to bend, stoop, and walk.   Parking in the Hospital Parking garage will be free to volunteers.  Completion of a free two-hour training and health screening at Kentucky Children’s Hospital is mandatory prior to volunteering for the Ronald McDonald Family Room.

The Academy/Broadway Christian Church - January 15, 2013

The Academy is set to start again for the year on Wednesday, January 23rd.  The Academy is a joint venture between Broadway Christian Church and Urban Impact of Lexington. This after school program for Harrison Elementary students provides tutoring and projects. Are you interested in becoming a volunteer literacy tutor with Bluegrass Literacy?

Clinton Global Initiative University: Jan 30, 2013

Building on the successful model of the Clinton Global Initiative, which brings together world leaders to take action on global challenges, President Clinton launched the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) in 2007 to engage the next generation of leaders on college campuses around the world.

Each year, CGI U hosts a meeting where students, youth organizations, topic experts, and celebrities come together to discuss and develop innovative solutions to pressing global challenges. CGI U 2013 will be held at Washington University in St. Louis from April 5 - 7, 2013, bringing together nearly 1,200 attendees to make a difference in CGI U's five focus areas: Education, Environment and Climate Change, Peace and Human Rights, Poverty Alleviation, and Public Health.

President Clinton will host the sixth annual meeting of CGI U from April 5 - 7, 2013 at Washington University in St. Louis. The meeting will bring together student leaders, NGO representatives, topic experts, and other prominent innovators to brainstorm ideas, share best practices, and develop their action plans for the months ahead. Any student above the age of 18 who is enrolled in an institution of higher education at the time of the meeting is eligible to apply. The meeting is free to attend if you are accepted.

Autumns Nights Fundraiser– “More Than Just A Color” Fashion Show. 

“Reclaiming the Invisible…Achieving the Impossible”

 
The West End Community Empowerment Project of Lexington Inc. (W.E.C.E.P.) will hold its third Annual Autumns Nights Fundraiser– “More Than Just A Color” Fashion Show, Saturday, November 17, 2012.  The evening will showcase past and present program participants, community volunteers, and some local celebrities.  Each model will have the opportunity to express their unique creativity as they strut down the runway, highlighting the latest in fall fashion.

Here is additional information from WECEP:

The cost of hosting this event will require community and corporate donations.  One hundred percent of the proceeds from this event will be used to pay for our leased space through the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government, where we provide programming to children and families of the community and surrounding areas.  W.E.C.E.P. has never been charged any occupancy fee for space so we will have a short fall in this fiscal year of $21,600.00, which is equivalent to $1,800.00 per month.  As a volunteer Executive Director of 17 years, I have struggled with asking for help in meeting this new obligation, but then I realized this organization has impacted too many children, youth, and families in the Lexington community by unleashing their potential for greatness.  W.E.C.E.P’s greatest contribution to the community has been in providing out of school programming to students K-12^th grade with a focus on math, science, language arts, performing arts, service learning, community service, and volunteerism.  W.E.C.E.P strives daily to uphold and carry out its Motto “Reclaiming the Invisible…  Achieving the Impossible”.  The people in the community that we serve come from various walks of life with many challenges and hardships.  Our staff and volunteers are resilient and steadfast in meeting their physical, spiritual, and emotional needs so that they will have a brighter future.  In our seventeen-year journey, we have seen many of our participants graduate from high school, be the first generation in their families to go college and complete secondary education.  Many have obtained numerous college degrees and are now starting their careers.

Join Delta Theta of Phi Mu Fraternity on November 11 for their first Cupcake Wars event to raise funds for our local Children’s Miracle Network hospital, the Kentucky Children’s Hospital.  Baking teams of 1-3 participants will compete for best tasting cupcake, best decorated or best themed cupcakes, and best cupcakes overall.  If baking isn’t your thing, just come eat!  You can sample cupcakes for only $3.00 and vote for your favorites. Or, for $2.00, decorate your own cupcake! The event will also include a silent auction featuring UK tickets, baked goods, and gift baskets.

Do something sweet for Children’s Miracle Network.

Baking Team Guidelines:

1.    All teams must register by Friday, November 9.

2.    All teams must bring at least 40 cupcakes to the event.

3.    All teams must display a list of cupcake ingredients.

4.    All cupcakes must be homemade.

5.    Teams are responsible for their own cupcake expenses.

6.    Phi Mu will provide plates, forks, napkins, and tablecloths.

The Nature Conservancy of Kentucky is looking for Volunteer Preserve Stewards to visit their preserves monthly, hiking the trails to check on the conditions of the preserve. The stewards work closely with staff to maintain trails, eradicate invasive species, and plan preserve workdays. The Participation Station- Warm Line

 

Volunteers are needed for the Warm Line, a program of Participation Station. It is a non-emergency phone line for people living with a mental illness. Individuals can call the Warm Line if need someone to talk to, or going through a stressful time, feeling cut-off from the world and isolated. Volunteers are needed Monday - Thursday 11:30am-9:00pm

Since 1992, Transylvania University has hosted Crimson Christmas, a holiday party for the children of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of the Bluegrass. In keeping with that tradition, residence life and the office of community service and civic engagement are teaming up to plan this year's event. Residence life will manage matching up the children with hosts, presents, Santa, etc. Office of community service and civic engagement manages the carnival. If your student organization would like to host a booth for the carnival at Crimson Christmas, complete the surveymonkey form by November 26.

Lexington Philharmonic- Nov 16 and 28

Lexington Philharmonic

The Lexington Philharmonic is looking for a few volunteers for the following special events:


*A concert on Friday, November 16. They need 1-2 people  from to run a marketing table. Volunteers will sit at the table and tell patrons about the Lexington Philharmonic events. Training will take about 5 minutes. Volunteers will need to be at the Singletary Center at 6 pm.

*Arlington Arts Day, Wednesday, November 28. They need about 10 people to help with 
the instrument petting zoo. This is the chance for children to become better aquainted with musical instruments by getting to hold them. Volunteers don't need to be musically inclined, but to be patient with children and willing to clean off the instruments after children are done.  Volunteers will also set up and tear down the event. Because this required a background check, please signup by November 14. Orientation to this event will take less than an hour. Volunteer shifts start at 8:45 am and end at 1:45 pm.

AVOL Dining Out For Life

AVOL is looking for Ambassadors for Dining Out For Life, Wednesday, November 28. That night, several restaurants in Lexington have agreed to donate a portion of their sales to AVOL. There are three shifts available: Breakfast 7-9 am, Lunch 10 am-1 pm, and Dinner 4:30 -10 pm. An Ambassador is the face of AVOL at each participating restaurant, letting guests know about Dining Out For Life. Volunteers thank the dining patrons by letting them sign up for drawing prizes.
