It's time to nominate outstanding individuals or groups for the Governor's Awards for Volunteerism and Service. This award recognized service completed in 2013.

The nomination form and other helpful resources can be found on the KCCVS website. Please read all the information carefully, as there have been a few changes to the required information, as well as the introduction of a new Veteran Volunteer Service Award category. Transylvania alumna Francesca Pribble and Transylvania staff member Ashley Gutshall were awarded the Governor’s Award for Volunteerism and Service in the National Service/Individual category in 2008 and 2009, respectively. The nomination deadline is Wednesday, February 26, 2014.

Nominations are sought for the 2013-14 Kentucky Outstanding Civic Education Leadership Award. The Award recognizes teachers, administrators and others who make notable contributions in promoting civic engagement. One finalist will be chosen from each Sweet 16 region, and the winner will receive a $500 award to use toward resources or equipment for his/her school or program. Habitat for Humanity is planning their Shamrock Shuffle 3K run and they need about 150 volunteers to make the event a success. Here are the dates and shifts when they need help:
  • SaturdayMarch 8: Volunteers will pre-register participants at the Habitat ReStore, 451 Southland Drive. Available shifts are 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., 1-5:30 p.m. and 5-7:30 p.m. Lunch and dinner are provided by Raising Cane's.
 
  • FridayMarch 14: Volunteers will pre-register participants at the Habitat ReStore and then help set up for the race at the Lexington Center in the final shift. Available shifts are 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., 1-5:30 p.m. and 5-9 p.m. Lunch and dinner are provided by Raising Cane's.

  • SaturdayMarch 15: On race day, volunteers assist with greeting and registering participants, setting up the race course and cleaning up after the race from 6-10 a.m. There is also an early shift for volunteers who want to participate in the race. A light breakfast and refreshments -- and a free race t-shirt -- will be provided for all volunteers.

Best Buddies Walk -March 22, 2014

The Best Buddies Kentucky Friendship Walk will take place on March 22, 2014 at Seneca Park, Louisville. Families and friends are welcome to join. Registration starts at 9am and the walk will begin around 10 am. Best Buddies walkers can join on an individual basis or as a team. The goal of Best Buddies is to establish a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
 
The FIRST TEAM to raise $500 within the next week (January 31, 2014 to February 7, 2014 at noon ET) will receive a pizza party, compliments of Best Buddies Kentucky!

Shop and Share for Domestic Violence Programs – February 1, 2014
 
 
Shop & Share, an annual one-day event to collect groceries and goods for domestic violence shelters around the state, will take place on Saturday, February 1. This program is organized by Kentucky’s First Lady Jane Beshear. To participate, stop by any Kroger location between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. and shop for items on their wish list. The wish list will be available at a table near the front door. Purchase a few items from the list and leave them with the volunteers on your way out the store.  There are 20 store locations in the Greenhouse 17 service area. Partners For Youth Grant Reviewers - By February 7


Partners for Youth is looking for volunteers to serve on their Partners for Youth Grassroots Grants Review Committees.  Volunteers will review and score 8 – 10 applications as well as attend ONE of the interview nights to interview those 8 – 10 applicants.  Volunteers should be prepared to evaluate the programs as well as share resources and ideas that may support the grant applicant's programming efforts. All grants support programs serving at-risk youth. This is a great opportunity to learn about the grant process from the distribution side!

Show a little love for the elderly in our neighborhood this Valentine's Day! The Office of Community Service and Civic Engagement will have a table in Forrer Front Lobby from February 3 to 7, from 5-7 p.m., to create personalized Valentine's Day cards for our neighbors at the Christian Care Communities Adult Day Center. In addition, the center will host a Valentine's party on Feb. 14 from 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. and would like three to four Transylvania volunteers to help distribute those valentines. Christian Care Communities is a few blocks from campus at 516 Maryland Ave. Students eligible for work study could volunteer at the party in exchange for work study funding, if arranged two to three days before the party. The ACS Hope Lodge - Ongoing



The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge provide housing, free of charge, to cancer patients undergoing outpatient treatment that live too far away to commute. They have 32 rooms and can house up to 64 people.

ACS Hope Lodge Dinner Groups  provide meals to guests Monday through Thursday at 6pm

Groups may cook meals offsite and bring them to the Lodge to serve OR bring food and prepare items onsite using Hope Lodge resources (pots, pans, etc…)

Groups are responsible for the purchase of items they intend to serve.

This is the most direct way to impact the families.

Volunteers are sought to help with the district science fair, February 8 at Bryan Station High School.

February 7 - About 10-20 volunteers are needed to help set up the fair on Friday afternoon/evening. Set up starts around 4 pm and will continue until set up is complete, typically between 10:00  pm and 11:00 pm, depending upon how many volunteers assist. 

February 8 - Science education majors (any level) or science content majors are needed to assist in the judging process on Saturday, February 8, from 8 am until done, usually around noon.
Volunteers willing to serve as judges may register by visiting http://www.fcps.net/about-fcps/general-info/science  and then click on “Apply to be a judge” to complete the information.

Lexington Habitat for Humanity has the following volunteer needs:

Construction: Volunteers are needed on most Fridays and Saturdays in February, March and April from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. We plan to build five homes by June 30, so several builds will be starting in the next few months.

Shamrock Shuffle 3K: This is our biggest fundraising event of the year with more than 2,000 participants, and we need 150 volunteers make it a success. Volunteers are needed on the following dates and shifts:

  • Saturday, March 8: Volunteers will pre-register participants at the Habitat ReStore, 451 Southland Drive. Available shifts are 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., 1-5:30 p.m. and 5-7:30 p.m. Lunch and dinner are provided by Raising Cane's.

On January 30, 2014 the Care Service Leaders for people with developmental challenges will be hosting a film viewing of the documentary "Monica & David: A Love Story “. This is a heartfelt and beautiful documentary about a young married couple whom both have down syndrome. The documentary follows the couple after their wedding, showing their hardships and triumphs over the first year of marriage. Monica, David, and their families will win over your hearts with all the love and support shared with one another even in the face of hardship. This documentary has won many awards including "Best Documentary Award" at the Tribeca Film Festival and the South Dakota Film Festival. This viewing of the documentary will be followed with a discussion on the film and about living with disabilities in today's society.  There will also be refreshment during the movie so please join us at the Student Involvement Center in the William T Young Campus Center at 7:30 PM on January 30th! God's Pantry, Individuals and Groups - ASAP



God's Pantry has a real need for regular volunteers who can be relied on to show up weekly or bi weekly for a shift at the food bank, answering phones and entering the calls into a simple computer system.  Shifts in the morning are 9a-12p and afternoon 1p-4p (see list below for day of week and number of volunteers needed.) 
 
Monday morning – 2 volunteers

They also need a group of volunteers to take a night from 5p-7p M through Friday at their new pantry opening on Cambridge Drive.  They  are looking for 3-5 people to take ownership of one night a week or a month and coordinate their group volunteering handing out the food in the pantry to the clients.

Kentuckians For The Commonwealth is holding a Voting Rights Lobby Day and Rally on Wednesday, January 15 in Frankfort.  Training starts at 8:45 am in Capitol Annex Room 113; lobbying runs from 9 am to 12:30 pm, and the Rally is at 1:00 pm in the Capitol Rotunda.

The focus of the rally is the restoration of voting rights for former felons.  Crenshaw will again introduce it in the House, and Neal in the senate.  If the issue of voter ID laws comes up, the KFTC is opposed to stricter laws.

The Direct Action & Research Training (DART) Center will be hosting an information session Tuesday, January 28 at 8pm to discuss careers in the field of community organizing with students and alumni interested in empowering communities and working for social change.

DART hires and trains organizers to lead campaigns on a broad set of justice issues including:


* Plugging the school-to-prison pipeline

* Reining in predatory lending practices

* Expanding access to primary health and dental care

* Prioritizing funding for affordable housing and job training

* Education reform in low-performing public schools


Placements sites include cities in Florida, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Ohio, South Carolina, and Virginia.  Positions start June 16, 2014.  Starting salary $34,000/year + benefits, with regular performance based raises.
