Building on the successful model of the Clinton Global Initiative, which brings together world leaders to take action on global challenges, President Clinton launched the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) in 2007 to engage the next generation of leaders on college campuses around the world.

Each year, CGI U hosts a meeting where students, youth organizations, topic experts, and celebrities come together to discuss and develop innovative solutions to pressing global challenges. CGI U 2013 will be held at Washington University in St. Louis from April 5 - 7, 2013, bringing together nearly 1,200 attendees to make a difference in CGI U's five focus areas: Education, Environment and Climate Change, Peace and Human Rights, Poverty Alleviation, and Public Health.

President Clinton will host the sixth annual meeting of CGI U from April 5 - 7, 2013 at Washington University in St. Louis. The meeting will bring together student leaders, NGO representatives, topic experts, and other prominent innovators to brainstorm ideas, share best practices, and develop their action plans for the months ahead. Any student above the age of 18 who is enrolled in an institution of higher education at the time of the meeting is eligible to apply. The meeting is free to attend if you are accepted.

Kentucky Collegiate Leadership Conference Call for Programs: Dec 5

The 2013 Kentucky Collegiate Leadership Conference will be hosted at NKU on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at the James C. & Rachel Votruba Student Union.  All details about the conference can be found on this site.  In the past, Transylvania has participated in many ways with this conference, from sending a delegation of 20 students, student/staff/alumni presenters, alumni keynote speakers, and even hosting it on our campus.  

 

They are looking for workshop proposals for the conference.  The session proposal deadline is Wednesday, December 5, 2012 by 3 pm.  They are accepting proposals for the following tracks of the conference:

• Community Service
• Greek (Fraternity and Sorority) Life
• General/Leadership 101 
• Programming Boards
• Student Governance (SGA) 

If you are not intersted in presenting, but would like to attend, they are holding 15 seats per school until Friday, January 18^th, 2013. This will guarantee that all schools have a chance to send students. After this date, registration will be open to all until the conference fills. Central Kentucky Radio Eye - Substitute Control Board Operators

CKRE needs substitute control board operators for their live broadcasts. They broadcast the Herald-Leader live Monday through Saturday from 8 to 9:30am, and on Sunday from 9 - 10:30am. They also broadcast the Courier Journal live Monday through Friday from 11 - noon. The YMCA is hosting a 5k run/walk for the benefit of the Y summer camp program. The 5k will occur Saturday, Dec. 8th 9 a.m. at Keeneland. The North Lexington Family YMCA is in need of volunteer instructors and coaches for the upcoming season. 

 

Pee Wee sports Instructors will be asked to help teach and introduce children ages 4-7 to various sports in a 30 minute long class every Monday and Wednesday evenings. This opportunity begins January 21. 

Youth Basketball Coaches are needed to coach a team ages 4-10 for 45 minutes during the week and play an hour long game on Saturday's. The basketball season starts January 7.

Each month, about 500 babies are born in Fayette county hospitals. Fayette County Public Schools encourages new families to engage in lifelong learning by giving them a gift bag with educational materials. The Office of Community Service and Civic Engagement invites Transy volunteers to help assemble those gift bags Thursday, Nov 29. Volunteers are needed at 4-5 p.m. and 5-6 p.m. at the old Johnson Elementary School, 123 Sixth Street. Eligible students may earn work-study funding for their service, but must contact Karen Anderson in advance. Volunteers should use their Transy e-mail addresses to sign up by Wednesday, Nov 28 here. In January 2012, the Obama Administration released its Road Map for civic learning, "Advancing Civic Learning and Engagement in Democracy."  The Road Map outlines nine steps the U.S. Department of Education (ED) is undertaking to increase civic learning and engagement across our country.  The Civic Learning and Engagement Initiative is requesting feedback from you on how ED should implement 4 of the 9 steps and define "civic learning and engagement."  We encourage educators, practitioners, students, researchers, and any other interested parties to submit thoughtful opinions, ideas, suggestions, and comments.

Autumns Nights Fundraiser– “More Than Just A Color” Fashion Show. 

“Reclaiming the Invisible…Achieving the Impossible”

 
The West End Community Empowerment Project of Lexington Inc. (W.E.C.E.P.) will hold its third Annual Autumns Nights Fundraiser– “More Than Just A Color” Fashion Show, Saturday, November 17, 2012.  The evening will showcase past and present program participants, community volunteers, and some local celebrities.  Each model will have the opportunity to express their unique creativity as they strut down the runway, highlighting the latest in fall fashion.

Here is additional information from WECEP:

The cost of hosting this event will require community and corporate donations.  One hundred percent of the proceeds from this event will be used to pay for our leased space through the Lexington Fayette Urban County Government, where we provide programming to children and families of the community and surrounding areas.  W.E.C.E.P. has never been charged any occupancy fee for space so we will have a short fall in this fiscal year of $21,600.00, which is equivalent to $1,800.00 per month.  As a volunteer Executive Director of 17 years, I have struggled with asking for help in meeting this new obligation, but then I realized this organization has impacted too many children, youth, and families in the Lexington community by unleashing their potential for greatness.  W.E.C.E.P’s greatest contribution to the community has been in providing out of school programming to students K-12^th grade with a focus on math, science, language arts, performing arts, service learning, community service, and volunteerism.  W.E.C.E.P strives daily to uphold and carry out its Motto “Reclaiming the Invisible…  Achieving the Impossible”.  The people in the community that we serve come from various walks of life with many challenges and hardships.  Our staff and volunteers are resilient and steadfast in meeting their physical, spiritual, and emotional needs so that they will have a brighter future.  In our seventeen-year journey, we have seen many of our participants graduate from high school, be the first generation in their families to go college and complete secondary education.  Many have obtained numerous college degrees and are now starting their careers.

Join Delta Theta of Phi Mu Fraternity on November 11 for their first Cupcake Wars event to raise funds for our local Children’s Miracle Network hospital, the Kentucky Children’s Hospital.  Baking teams of 1-3 participants will compete for best tasting cupcake, best decorated or best themed cupcakes, and best cupcakes overall.  If baking isn’t your thing, just come eat!  You can sample cupcakes for only $3.00 and vote for your favorites. Or, for $2.00, decorate your own cupcake! The event will also include a silent auction featuring UK tickets, baked goods, and gift baskets.

Do something sweet for Children’s Miracle Network.

Baking Team Guidelines:

1.    All teams must register by Friday, November 9.

2.    All teams must bring at least 40 cupcakes to the event.

3.    All teams must display a list of cupcake ingredients.

4.    All cupcakes must be homemade.

5.    Teams are responsible for their own cupcake expenses.

6.    Phi Mu will provide plates, forks, napkins, and tablecloths.
