Oct. 26, 2013, is the 23rd annual Make A Difference Day, the nation’s largest day of community service. Transylvania traditionally has between 3-12 service projects on that day.   Some projects are limited to members of a given organization, and some are open for anyone to join.

There will be a blood drive on Thursday, October 31, from 10:30 am - 4:30 pm in the Campus Center. Opportunities to sign up for a donation appointment include:
  • visit the Kentucky Blood Center's blood drive schedule and search Fayette County events for the drive at Transylvania on October 31
  • Stop by the Office of Community Service and Civic Engagement table at the Health and Wellness Fair on Oct 17, 10 am - 2 pm in the Campus Center Gym.

They are looking for people to talk to their children about careers, both current practitioners and college students studying to go into a given profession.  Ideally, they would like to have an event once a month for several months.  This would be a great mentoring opportunity! RESULTS is a grassroots advocacy organization works to create the political will to end hunger and poverty. A RESULTS volunteer group is forming in Lexington-it equips everyday people with the knowledge and training to effectively engage Congress, the media and the community on issues affecting people in poverty in the U.S. and around the world. The meeting will include an overview of RESULTS’ work, advocacy skills to help you create the political will for change, and information on how you can get involved. The ultimate goal is to end poverty in America. On October 20th at 2:30 P.M. the 16th District PTA is holding a 5K at Coldstream Park in Lexington. There will also be a 1 mile fun run at 1:30 P.M. The race is a way to promote healthy lifestyles and raise funds for PTAs throughout Fayette County. The 16th District PTA is looking for race participants and volunteers. Fostering Goodwill Run for Independence 5K – October 19

Fostering Goodwill is hosting a Run for Independence 5K on October 19th at 9:00 A.M. at Commonwealth Stadium in Lexington. The race is being held to raise awareness for foster youth who are transitioning from the foster care system to independence. Pre-registration cost for the 5K is $20 or $15 for students with valid ID. Registration cost on race day is $25. Lexington Center Museum & Gallery is seeking volunteers to help guide visitors through Titanic’s voyage during Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition.  The exhibition opens October 5 and runs through January 26.    Volunteer opportunities will be available seven days a week, and will be scheduled in 4-hour shifts.  Specialized training and materials to enhance visitors’ experience will be provided.   

A two part training series is required of all volunteers.  The first session is Lexington Center Museum & Gallery orientation.    The second session is exhibition specific.  Those interested in volunteering should email their name and phone number to Tammi Johnson, tjohnson@lexingtoncenter.com.  

The museum will be open Sunday through Thursday from 11 am to 8 pm.  On Friday and Saturday, the hours are 10 am to 10 pm.  The Lexington Center Museum and Gallery is located on the second floor of Lexington Center. 

Drawing over 25 million visitors worldwide, participants will come face-to-face with artifacts such as delicate vials of perfume, china bearing the logo of the White Star Line, and over 125 additional objects recovered from the debris field of the wreck site. 

Titanic: The Artifact Exhibition is organized by Premier Exhibitions, Inc, and RMS Titanic, Inc. which is the sole salvor-in-possession to the wreck site of Titanic, and owner of the collection of over 5,500 artifacts that have been recovered from the wreck site of Titanic

Lexington’s new low-power non-profit community radio project is look a few volunteers. Volunteers will work in groups of 2-4 people to administer surveys to help determine projects and programming on the low-power community radio project. Volunteers are needed in 1 to 4 hour blocks of time anytime between now and October 3. Komen Lexington will be supplying volunteers for the Bread Olympics at the Crave Festival.  All volunteers will need to check in at Crave 'mission control' about 30 minutes before your shift.  The key thing for this role is to keep the bread items stocked, keep the games moving and maintain good crowd flow and order.  There will be an information sheet about how the game works at the volunteer check-in with instructions about how to manage the game.  Linda Uffman of Komen Lexington will be there at 10:30 am to talk to the first shift and get them started. Imani Baptist Church Peace Walk – Sept 15 and 22

The Imani Baptist Church is starting a community prayer walk to stand up against violence and draw attention to community support for peace. The walk has taken place for the past several Sundays, and will continue until September 22. The community prayer walk will begin at Imani Baptist Church, traveling south east on Georgetown Road, turning around at Newtown Pike and returning to the church.  The walk takes approximately 1 hours to cover a distance of 3.4 miles. CRAVE - Sign Up By September 15



CRAVE is a 2 day festival featuring local food vendors of all ethnicities along with many different types of music.  It will take place Sept. 21-22 at Lexington's  Moondance Amphitheater-Beaumont Center.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit the non-profit organization FoodChain.  They are looking for 20 all-star volunteers that could serve as specific helpers to vendors. These volunteers would be paired up ahead of a time with their vendor to learn about the menu items they'd help serve and a bit more about how the food is made and what local ingredients are used. On the day of their shift volunteers would cover a 6 hour shift, selling the specific items for tickets at the festival, interacting with customers, and providing basic education on local food.  Transylvania sustainability office will  have a booth at the festival as well, and will also need volunteers. Komen Lexington has the following volunteer needs:

-October 4th , 11am-2pm approximately 20 people to help with registration and the Komen Shop at the Pink out festival.
-October 4th , 2pm - 4pm approximately 16 people to help with registration and the Komen Shop at the Pink Out festival.
-October 4th, 4pm -9pm approximately 20 people to help with registration and the Komen shop at the Pink out Festival. The 9pm people will help box everything up and prepare for registration for the next morning.
-October 4th 5 pm downtown at courthouse, 5 people to help with tables and chairs.
-October 4th 5 pm downtown at courthouse, 1 person to fill water barrel.
-October 4th 5 pm downtown at courthouse, 2 people to place signage.
-October 4th 9- 930 pm, 5 people to help with loading up at legends ball park and unloading down town in pods.
-October 5th  5:30 am, 6-8 people to help unload water and ice.
-October 5th 6:45 am, 2 people to help set up water stations.
-October 5th 5:00 am, 5 people to help unload pods. (Shirts, banners, games, food, etc.)

The Night Market is a family friendly, inclusive programming sponsored by the North Limestone Cultural Development Corporation.  It is basically a street market that takes place at night. The next one will take place on September 21st in conjunction with Boomslang Music festival. They are looking for 10-12 volunteers to help with setup, tear down, parking, and various other tasks on the day of the event. In August, nearly 1000 people in attendance, and very positive reviews by vendors and attendees. The North Limestone Cultural Development Corporation is a non-profit entity whose goal is to make the Northside of Lexington a more beautiful, livable, and sustainable place. The Office of Community Service and Civic Engagement intends to have a booth at Transylvania's Health Fair.  One of the things we will do at the booth is sign up people to donate blood at the October 31 blood drive. The League of Women Voters, Lexington, KY is looking for volunteers to judge their annual essay contest. During the week of November 1-7, 2013, the essays will be e-mailed to the judges, along with the judging criteria.

The judges will meet to determine the ultimate winners sometime between November 7-10.  A doodle link will be sent to judges to determine the best meeting time between November 7-10.

The 9/11 Heroes Run is on Saturday, September 7 starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Woodford County Fairgrounds.  The celebration will continue with music featuring Tom Cool, petting zoo, pony rides, face painting, and food vendors. Cruise-In car show will run from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at Falling Springs Pavilion.  Everyone is invited to bring a photograph of their Heroes (police, fire, military), past or present, to post on the Hero Board.

The Run for a Reason: Refuge for Women 5K will take place on Saturday, September 14 at 8 am at Southland Christian Church (5001 Harrodsburg Road, Nicholasville, KY) Proceeds benefit Refuge for Women, an organization that helps women break the chains of the sex industry by providing a home where they can go to heal and change their path towards freedom in Christ. Cost is $25 if you register before race day or $30 on race day. All racers will receive a dri-fit shirt.
