Happy National Volunteer Week

Happy National Volunteer Week!!!

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank our Transylvania student volunteers for all the ways they contribute to the Lexington and extended community. Thanks to everyone who attended the volunteer celebration  on Tuesday at the CARE House.

And now, a little information about our Transylvania student volunteers...

Washington Monthly listed Transylvania as #109 in its 2012 liberal arts school rankings, based on contribution to the public good. For more information on their definitions and ranking,  visit their website.

As of April 22, 372 individual Transylvania University student volunteer have reported 3846.9 hours of community service for the current academic year.

Of the students who report their community service:

·         71% report accomplishing direct community service (for definitions, visit http://inside.transy.edu/pages/cservice/report.htm )

·         85% of service reported was accomplished outside of academic requirements.

·         28% of the community service reported was accomplished by students who are not affiliated with a fraternity or sorority. Total breakdown for Greeks/Independents:

o   Independents - 28.33%

o   Alpha Omicron Pi - 22.25%

o   Phi Mu - 9.65%

o   Phi Kappa Tau - 9.44%

o   Chi Omega - 9.23%

o   Pi Kappa Alpha - 8.29%

o   Delta Delta Delta - 7.66%

o   Delta Sigma Phi - 4.93%

o   Kappa Alpha Order - 0.21%

·         80.95% of volunteers reporting their service do not belong to a Transylvania sports team.

Greeks vs Non-Greeks?

Sports Team Involvement vs. Not on a Team?

For Academic Credit or Not

The above figures are based on student reports submitted through http://inside.transy.edu/pages/cservice/report.htm and statistics are calculated by Formsite.com Students indicate their group identity when reporting their community service. Reports are based on community service conducted between June 1, 2012 and May 31, 2013. Of course, the year is not over yet. Please continue to report your service at http://inside.transy.edu/pages/cservice/report.htm for the 2012-13 academic year.

Numbers are great, but they do not illustrated all the meaningful connections being made, goals accomplished and real community needs being met. These things are often only be measured by the stories you share, the memories you make, and the leadership lessons you use in future community experiences. This is what makes a volunteer experience valuable beyond measure, and treasured by those you choose to serve.

Again, thanks for your continued involvement in the community!

Karen
